When Congress passed the American Rescue Plan Act of 2021 (ARPA) earlier this year, they made health insurance far more affordable for far more people — in fact, four out of five people are now eligible for health insurance that costs $10 or less per month. Even if you already enrolled in health insurance or didn't qualify for savings in the past, it's worth checking to see if you're eligible for additional savings now, because there's a very good chance that you qualify.

The Basics

First, let's go over a few important health insurance concepts:

  1. Marketplace coverage: this refers to health insurance available through the Affordable Care Act, which means it needs to meet certain requirements and include a number of essential benefits. When you enroll in health insurance through Stride, you're enrolling in Marketplace coverage.
  2. Tax credits: sometimes called "subsidies," these are discounts applied to your health insurance based on how much income you make in a year.
  3. Premium: this is how much you pay per month to have health insurance

So, when you enroll in Marketplace coverage through Stride, you're enrolling in a health insurance plan that meets quality standards set by the government, and the premium is how much you'll pay each month for that insurance. Depending on your income, you may qualify for tax credits, which will reduce your monthly premium.

More affordable health insurance for more people

Under the American Rescue Plan:

  1. More people than ever qualify for tax credits, even those who weren't eligible in the past
  2. Most people currently enrolled in a Marketplace plan may qualify for more tax credits — which means an even lower premium
  3. Health insurance is now going to cost much less after these new savings are applied

How to find out if you qualify for the new savings

The amount of your premium tax credits depends on your estimated income for 2021. You can easily check to see if you qualify — and for how much — on Stride, with no strings attached and completely free. See if you qualify for additional savings.

Due to the COVID-19 emergency, there's more time to enroll in Marketplace coverage. If you enroll by the end of each month, you can start using your coverage on the first day of the following month, though it's important to note that the last day to enroll is August 15th. Here are the deadlines:

  • Enroll by May 31st for coverage starting June 1st
  • Enroll by June 30th for coverage starting July 1st
  • Enroll by July 31st for coverage starting August 1st
  • Enroll by August 15th for coverage starting September 1st

Remember, each month that you don't enroll or change your plan increases the risk of being stuck with expensive medical bills or missing out on savings, so enroll or change your plan today!
